Liturgical Ministries

Assembly

The assembly is the primary ministry in which we all share. We are the Body of Christ gathered as one. To prepare for this gathering, we are encouraged to prepare our minds and hearts to enter the celebration.

The liturgy is not what the priests and ministers do while others watch. Liturgy is the most important ministry we all share with equal responsibility as baptized people. We are called to fully participate by praying, singing, listening to the proclamation of God’s Word and reverently approaching the distribution of the Eucharist. We are called to be hospitable, gracious, and prayerful. We show respect for the presence of God in our midst and for the members of our faith community, by coming to church on time and remaining until after the celebrant leaves the altar.

    Altar Servers

The Altar Server Ministry is truly a special one.  Even before the second century, special duties were given to lay people during the liturgical celebrations.  These services were preparing the altar and assisting in cleaning sacred vessels after the celebration.

The ministry of Altar Server is open to all young men and women of our parish who are in grades five and up. Altar Servers prepare, pray, sing and take an active role in the celebration of the Mass and other prayerful celebrations. If you are called to this ministry.

  • Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

Eucharist Ministers PIcExtraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

The Eucharist constitutes the very life of the Church, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry; no one who believes in me shall ever thirst."

In every celebration of the Eucharist, a sufficient number of ministers are needed for the reverent and orderly distribution of the Eucharist. Lay ministers of the Eucharist assist the bishops, priests, and deacons in this ministry.

Catholic women and men who are in good standing and members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish may be invited to perform this ministry for our parish by the Pastor. After receiving spiritual, theological and practical preparation, Eucharistic Ministers are commissioned to perform their ministry reverently for a term of three years which may be renewed.

Eucharistic ministers recognize the Body of Christ in those they bring the Eucharist and, ultimately act as the Body of Christ by fully participating in the life of the parish and the wider community. These ministers are willing to commit to a monthly schedule, to prepare properly for their service, to arrive on time and to dress appropriately for their ministry.

If you would like to add your name to the list of potential candidates for this ministry, please contact the rectory.

  • Ministers of the Word (Lectors)

Bible PicMinisters of the Word (Lectors)

The ministry of the Lector is to share God’s Word with those assembled at Liturgy. This is a sacred duty which involves sharing one’s own faith and requires adequate preparation.

Lectors proclaim the Word of God in the first two readings at the celebration of mass to which they are assigned. They use good public speaking skills: project their voice, good phrasing, proper emphasis, etc. This ministry is open to all men and women of the parish who are practicing Catholics, whose lifestyle reflects what the scriptures proclaim and who possess a reasonably good speaking voice.

  • Hospitality

    Stained Glass PIcHospitality Ministry

Every parishioner is called to be a minister of hospitality by reaching out to welcome other parishioners and especially visitors to our parish. We are called to recognize Christ in one another and give witness together that we are building the Body of Christ in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.

The ministry of Hospitality is especially evident in adult parishioners who serve the parish as Usher and Greeter at our weekend Masses, holiday Masses, and special services. Ushers seat worshipers, assist with Offertory Gifts when necessary, take up collections and distribute bulletins. Greeters welcome parishioners taking note of new parishioners and visitors and making them feel at home.

If you would like to volunteer, please check the Ministry list for the name of the contact person.

  • Offertory Gift Bearers

Prior to each liturgy, the ushers will ask members of the Assembly to carry the bread and wine to the altar and present them to the Presider at the Presentation of the Gifts and Altar.

  • Music Ministries

The Choir, Ensemble, Youth Group and Children’s Choir provide current and traditional music to accompany the Mass and other special services. Our primary ministry is to support and encourage congregational singing.

All parishioners who desire to serve in the Ministry of Music, and are willing to commit their time and energy to weekly rehearsals, to sing in the choir, the contemporary groups, be a cantor or an instrumentalist are most welcome.

The Girls choir is made up of young ladies in grades 3-8.  Many of our choir members have participated

through all of these grades, and some have returned to this choir as assistant directors.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. in the church from fall to early spring.

"this choir sings at the Offertory of the Mass five or six times throughout the school year, usually at the 12:00 Sunday Mass.

These children receive vocal training and are exposed to a variety of musical styles, learning about their faith through sacred song, minister to their parish community, and develop friendships within the choir. All children are welcome to audition!
